New standards have been proposed for the educational requirements expected of cosmetologists by the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing. All practitioners of this industry are required to catch up with the new benchmarks before the 31st of March, 2011.
Wisconsin has around 43,000 professionals in the cosmetology field in need of training. This mammoth prospect had the dean of cosmetology and trades at the Moraine Park Technical College, Jon Waldhuetter commenting that this will be a “huge undertaking”.
In the face of the impending deadline, six hours of education comprising of two hours of lectures on law and four in the field of safety, hygiene and infection control are to be imparted to all licensed barbers and cosmetologists. Further, they are expected to undergo education classes for 12 hours every two years before their license renewal appointment.
The cosmetology community is positive about this education plan, with many of them commenting on the prospective improvement in skill and creativity that will be achieved. Many even pointed out that these regulations will help curb license misuse.
This training based on government directives will cost money. Many salons are ready to cash out for a better skilled employee base. Though, the price the state will ask for imparting this training is not yet determined, most cosmetologists have a worked out plan as to who will pay for the training - the employer, the employee or both.
